Please join me for a presentation of the results of the Search for the First Fort Vancouver. I will be discussing what I found during my archaeological investigation of the project area and what I learned from my ethnographic study with Vancouver neighborhood residents. I hope to see you there, but if you cannot make it, don’t worry, I will be posting results on this blog as soon as I am able.
March 27, 2019, 7 pm at the Fort Vancouver Visitor Center, 1501 E Evergreen Blvd, Vancouver, Washington.
Exciting! Planning to be there for sure!
Have been following your blog. Unable to attend due to living to far away. This first fort’s location and other facts pertaining to it have been an interest to me for quite awhile and have done some research myself and really appreciate your efforts. Hope you will share what you shared at your presentation to us unable to attend. Thanks Amy.
It seems that Section 2 has higher ground to the north, which possibly suggests that defense from possible Native American attack might not have been a reason for establishment of the 1st fort in that location, since they could have been attacked from the high ground to the north?
Thank you, Kent, I agree with you. The defensive position of the site has long been given as a reason for locating the first fort on the terrace above the Columbia River. I believe the two more important reasons were safety from seasonal flooding, and its visibility on high ground. The HBC wanted to make its presence known, and this was a great spot for being seen.
Hi Amy, what you say makes sense. I’ll look forward to perusing your thesis when completed, I think I saw that you’ll include a link to it when done?
